EU: EC to forge closer relations with eastern neighbours

The European Council has given the green light to a plan to forge closer relations with eastern neighbours with an aim of stabilizing its eastern borders.

"The European Council agrees on the need to further promote regional cooperation among the EU's eastern neighbours and between the EU and the region," said a conclusion approved by the two-day summit.

The proposal was put forward by Poland and Sweden, driving forces pushing the 27-nation EU to build "eastern dimension" with Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, to name a few.

The EU could loosen visa restrictions on former Soviet republics, enhance cooperation in the fields of politics, economics, environment and trade, saying enhanced regional cooperation could eventually lead them into the EU family.
