Bilateral Relations: Afghanistan and Iran set to inaugurate transit route

According to a report released by the Public Relations Office of Roads and Transportation Ministry, the first phase of Herat-Meymaneh transit route will be inaugurated tomorrow in the presence of several high-ranking officials from Iran and Afghanistan.

Mehr News Agency reports the initial phase of the construction is made possible by a grant from Iran based on an MOU signed between the two nations in September 2004. The road will connect Herat with eight other northern and north-western territories in Afghanistan and will make a fast connection from the central Asian republics to the Persian Gulf littoral states and Europe simultaneously.

Also getting underway is the Khaf-Sangan-Herat railroad which is part of Iran's commitment for reconstruction of Afghanistan.
