Opinion: Troy Davis - one of many

Troy Davis a convicted murderer, who has spent longer on Death Row than most Australian murderers spend in prison, is scheduled to die at 7pm today.

Although convicted by a jury for the murder of an off-duty policeman, the lack of evidence and withdrawal or recanting of witness statements, leaves the acrid smell of grave doubt and injustice in the air.

At the very least, Davis deserves a retrial. Yet once again, the powers that be, have decided he should die.

There has been world wide protests over the decision - and rightly so as Justice must be seen to be done, and not as a done deal.

But at the same time, let us remember he is not alone. Each day in countries such as Iran, the innocent face the evening knowing the next day they will be hung from a crane, or have a chair kicked away, leaving them to hang and die. The mental turmoil they must face is unimaginable.

They should not be forgotten, or go unreported merely because they are not Western victims of injustice. An injustice is an injustice no matter which country or religion is involved.

Troy Davis should not die. Nor should those thousands around the world who do not share his name, but share the same injustice.
