SOURCE Ministry of Justice of the Kingdom of Bahrain

The Ministry of Justice of the Kingdom of Bahrain Released the Following Statement:

His Majesty the King has created a new fund to provide effective remedies to individuals and their families who may have suffered harm during the disruptions that occurred in Bahrain earlier this year.

The fund, established on Tuesday with the issuance of Royal Decree-Law 30, is the first of its kind in the region. It is constructed to be consistent with the best and most successful practices existing in international law. The new fund supplements current remedies available to victims under existing law.

The Kingdom of Bahrain takes very seriously all allegations that persons have been mistreated, whether by state officials or others. Victims who may seek relief from the newly established fund include the direct victim, the immediate family or dependents of the direct victim, and persons who have suffered harm in intervening to assist victims in distress or to prevent victimization.

Through this Royal Decree, His Majesty the King establishes a Special Fund for Victims. The remedies provided will be consistent with the Basic Principles and Guidelines on the Right to a Remedy and Reparation for Victims of Gross Violations of International Human Rights Law and Serious Violations of International Human Rights, adopted and proclaimed by the General Assembly Resolution 60/147 of 16 December 2005.
