Iran: Iran becomes member of UNESCO Inter-Gov’t Oceanology Commission

Paris, July 2, IRNA –Iran became a member of Executive Council of Inter-Governmental Oceanology Commission of UNSECO, it was announced Friday.

The position was gained thanks to efforts made by IRI Permanent Ambassador to UNESCO Mohammad-Reza Majidi.

Speaking with IRNA Friday night in Paris, Majidi said, “Iran became a member of the Executive Council of the important Inter-Governmental Oceanology Commission of the UNESCO during the 26th General Assembly Meeting, held from June 22nd to June 25th, at permanent headquarters of UNESCO in Paris.

He said, “Taking advantage of the seas and oceans for transportation, trade, food and medicine and mineral resources, as well as the coastal security of countries that have direct access to them is quite vital, and the membership of the Islamic Republic of Iran at the Inter-Governmental Oceanology Commission of the UNSECO, is therefore, of significant importance for our country.”
He further reiterated, “In addition to billions of living creatures in the seas and the oceans that get their food from them, over half of the human beings’ population on earth, too, depend on food from the seas, and despite that huge amount of usage, that is only a very small portion of the blessings and God-given wealth there, which is way above the resources found on the earth.”
He added, “For instance, it is possible to gain billions of tons of fish and other living creatures and several times more of plants from the bottom of the seas and oceans annually, and put them at the disposal of the human beings for healthy usage.”

He reiterated, “Therefore, keeping in mind the role of the seas and the oceans in the lives of the human societies today and in the future, and their great strategic worth today, the active and influential presence of the Islamic Republic of Iran at this important international body, particularly at its executive council, is of great significance.”

The Permanent Ambassador of Iran at UNESCO said that the total area of the earth is 510 million square kilometers, out of which 360 million kilometers is covered with the seas and the oceans, which means over seven tenths of the earth area is covered with water, inclusive of the rivers, too, and therefore, the presence of the Islamic Republic of Iran in decision makings over that vast span was a bare necessity.

A short while ago, too, nine beautiful Persian gardens, whose fame has long been acknowledged worldwide as of time immemorial, were internationally registered at the UNESCO, thanks to the efforts made by the representative of the IRI there.
