Mining: South Africa - seventy illegal miners surface after amnesty

Business Report reports seventy illegal miners have surfaced under an amnesty period from Harmony gold mines, the mine management said.

The mine also prevented their workers from taking food underground, to prevent them from selling it to illegal miners.

"We, in consultation with our unions, stopped our employees from taking food underground with them. Water, however, is freely available underground."

She said the mine was trying to combat illegal mining for the past 30 years.

Illegal miners who did surface would have their fingerprints taken and should they be found underground in the future, they would be arrested.
