North Korea: 200,000 political prisoners detained in North Korea

An estimated 200,000 political prisoners are being detained in North Korea are being held in prison camps in North Korea, South Korea's public broadcaster KBS reported Thursday, citing state-run human rights watchdog.

In its first-ever report on detention camps in the North, the South Korean National Human Rights Commission also said that there are six such detainment facilities across the North, down from 13 in the 1970s.

"Beatings and torture are widespread in the concentration camps and that punishment was strengthened in 2006 for those who had been repatriated from China after attempting to flee the country,"
