Egypt: The $1 bn campaign to save Egyptian businessman from hanging

According to reports in the UK based Arabic daily Al Quds Al Arabi, the family of Hesham Talaat Mustafa, the Egyptian businessman sentenced to death for ordering the murderof Lebanese singer Suzan Tamim, has launched a $1bn campaign to change the law under which he was convicted.

According to the report Egyptian businessmen and parliamentarians are lobbying to change an article of the Egyptian penal code so that Mustafa would be spared the death penalty.

The business tycoon’s family is bankrolling the campaign, which was said to have a budget of $1bn.

As part of plans to sway public opinion, the family will build 3,000 apartments for low income earners, a source close to the family was quoted as saying.
