Bulgaria: Low birth rate among Bulgarians and high birth rate among Roma changes demographics

Over the recent years the birth rate in Bulgaria is going up, but still it is lower than mortality rate. We are in a demographic crisis. The population is aging, Mediana Agency sociologist Kolyo Kolev said in an interview with Focus News Agency.

He says there is a tendency for female Bulgarians and Bulgarian Turks, to give birth at a higher age. He says the years of a low birth rate among Bulgarians and a comparatively high birth rate among Roma changes the structure of the population.

“In this sense, part of the birth rate falls on Roma ethnic group where birth age is definitely lower than among female Bulgarians and Bulgarian Turks,” he said.
