Australia's bushfire disaster: Entire communities lie in ruins as death toll rises - video, contact numbers, how you can help

108 dead

750 homes destroyed

330,000 hectares of land destroyed.

These are the grim figures behind Australia's devastating bushfires. The death toll is likely to rise as authorities move from house to house discovering more bodies amongst the charred ruins of homes.

Hundreds more have been seriously injured - suffering severe burns as they tried to flee what has been described by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as, "hell in all its fury."

Entire communities have been wiped off the map as the unmerciful inferno swept across Victoria. Imagine trying to out-run, out-wit, an unstoppable mountain of flames stretching for mile after mile, moving faster than you can think what to do. The horror, the fear and sheer sense of helplessness is beyond imagination.

Victoria's Premier John Brumby has launched the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund in partnership with the Australian Government and Red Cross to support communities impacted by these cruel, devastating fires

Those wishing to donate to the appeal can do so by visiting the Australian Red Cross. An independent panel made up of community leaders will oversee the appeal Fund's operation.

Although many lives have been tragically lost, many more have been saved by the brave men and women of the Country Fire Authority - Volunteers who unselfishly put their lives on the line to save others. Please take a look at what they do and how you can offer support. CFA
