Refugees: Homeless World Cup players stay behind

Last week I posted daily articles on the Homeless World Cup, an event that demonstrated more about sportsmanship and overcoming difficulties than most highly paid, over-rated sports "stars". Many of those taking part came from countries that had been torn apart by war and conflict. It is not surprising that many were reluctant to leave!

The Australian Department of Immigration has confirmed that eight players from Afghanistan and seven from Zimbabwe have applied for further visas" though it is not known if they sought asylum. It is also reported all of the members of the Liberian women's homeless team missed their flights home after the tournament and a player from Kenya is missing.

Australia is a large country with a small population - a few people who demonstrated a determination to overcome difficulties most of us could never imagine, wont have too much of a negative effect!
