Corruption: Football - Bulgaria investigates referees’ chief for abuse of power, match manipulation

Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office brought accusation against Borislav Alexandrov, former chairperson of the referee committee with the Bulgarian Football Federation (BFF). Public prosecutor Boryana Betsova announced the news for FOCUS News Agency.

Mrs. Betsova explained that the charge is brought over exerting pressure and abuse of power. The public prosecutor also informed that the accusation is grounded on seven football games, which Alexandrov tried to manipulate.

In three of the games, Alexandrov lobbied in favor of FC Belasitsa (town of Petrich). Betsova also informed that the prosecutor’s office will also summon Ivan Lekov, former deputy chairperson of the State Agency for Youths and Sports. She explained that the case concerns financial fraud in the frames of the receiving of the international sports delegation to a seminar in Bulgaria in 2006. The prosecutor’s office is expected to bring accusation against Lekov on Wednesday.
