Corruption: Chilean President urges politicians to fight corruption

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has urge political actors to be responsible for the fight against corruption.

Speaking at The Convention of the United Nations against Corruption, Challenges for its Application in Chile, she said: "The best antidote against corruption is to let the daylight fill each corner of our public and private activities."

The president affirmed that her country has "tuned its sensitivity and intolerance to corruption, favouritism, patronage system, discriminations and sectarianism in the exercise of the public functions."

"Do we want the citizens to trust their institutions and authorities or are we going to take electoral advantage of accusations without bases?" she asked - an apparent reference to the rightist parties' criticisms of the alleged abuse of government's money for her presidential campaign in 2005.
