Emigration: Japan to compensate emigrants who suffered hardship in the Dominican Republic after WWII

Japan's parliament has approved payouts of up to two million yen ($17,000) each to Japanese who suffered hardship in the Dominican Republic after emigrating in the 1950s.

Japan helped citizens leave the destruction after World War II, but after being promised a sun-kissed paradise emigrants who had hoped to be farmers, found only stony plots of land

1,300 Japanese who remain in the Caribbean nation will be eligible for compensation with amounts depending on individual circumstances.
