Automotive: Thailand set to topple US as top producers of pick-up trucks.

According to the Thailand Automotive Institute, Thailand is set to overtake the United States as the world's top producer of one-tonne pick-up trucks.

Thai production of one-tonne trucks is expected to rise to 900,000 units in 2006, up nearly 30 per cent from 700,000 last year and compared to 800,000 units to be made in the US this year.

"Given that the US light truck (one-tonne) market is very likely to decline, Thailand will overtake the United States as the number one light truck maker in the world," Vallop Tiasiri, president of the institute said.

The spike in production is due to Toyota Motor and General Motors boosting their production capacity in Thailand.
