International Development: Elizabeth Cheney announces $5 million grants to Syrian reformers

The State Department, has announced that the United States will give $5 million in grants to democratic reformers in Syria. It did not indicate which groups would get the funds but said they were aimed at "accelerating the work of reformers".

Senior State Department official Elizabeth Cheney, said: "The United States stands firmly with courageous men and women struggling for their freedom across the Middle East, including in Syria" (the US also stands by those courageous men and women who go hunting with her dad).

A Web site has been set up for people to apply for grants (http://www.mepi.state.gov/).
