Health: China to ban new cigarette factories

China, has said it will not approve any new cigarette factories including joint ventures as part of efforts to reduce consumption.

Sha Zukang, Chinese ambassador to the United Nations Office in Geneva, also said that the government will put existing tobacco production under strict control through taxes and industry reorganization.

He was speaking at two-week conference on implementing the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), which aims at curbing tobacco use among the world's 1.3 billion smokers.

China has an estimated 350 million smokers - that's an awful lot of extra taxes.
