America West merger evokes nostalgia

The planned merger of America West Airlines and US Airways, has caused demand for merchandise featuring the America West Logo.

Employees and travellers are snapping up items such as model planes, hats and shirts.

I am not surprised. Even though travel has changed since I worked for Thomas Cook way back in the 70s, certain airlines are fondly remembered.

Seasoned travellers still talk of B.O.A.C. (British Overseas Airways Corporation) the uniforms, the logo and the "Junior Jet Club Log Book."

Pan Am, second only in brand recognition to Cocoa Cola, evokes memories of the golden age of travel. I am sure a look at airchive.com will bring back happy memories of a time when air travel was a pleasure and not a chore.

America West Airlines, may take on the name of US Airways, but for many, the name will live on.
