United Nations, New York, Sept 24, IRNA - British Foreign Secretary William Hague called for promotion of Tehran-London ties after a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif here on Monday.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 68th session of the UN General Assembly at the UN headquarters in New York.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Hague described it as constructive.

Recalling stands taken by the administration of President Hassan Rohani, Hague said “the time is right” to promote Tehran-London ties.

He added that the ongoing crisis in Syria, Iran’s nuclear issue, human rights and bilateral relations between the two capitals were among major topics discussed in the meeting.

The British foreign secretary stressed that Iran could play a constructive role in Syria particularly in the framework of the Geneva 2 conference.

The United Kingdom does not seek a confrontational relationship with Iran and is ready for better relations,” he reiterated.

He added that London welcomes President Rohani and FM Zarifs recent statements on Irans readiness to improve relations with the outside world.

Relations between Iran and Britain hit an all-time low in November 2011, when the two countries shut down their diplomatic missions as a result of Britain’s key role in the imposition of a new set of western sanctions against Iran and its repeated meddling in Iran’s domestic affairs.

Iran recalled all its staff and closed its embassy in London after Britain recalled its diplomatic mission in Tehran due to protests in front of the British embassy by thousands of Iranian students who demanded severed ties with London.
