Journalist Ramón Maldonado and camaraman Daniel Sánchez from Canal Litoral Atlántico, in the city of La Ceiba, Atlántida department, escaped unharmed from an firearms attack by an unidentified suspect riding a motorcycle.

On Monday 20 May 2013 in Colonia Villa Antonella, minutes after leaving the Canal Litoral Atlántico building around 9 a.m., a motorcyclist drove in front of Maldonado and shot repeatedly at him before driving off at top speed.

“Daniel turned on the camera and started recording the motorcyclist, who drove into a bus but quickly recuperated and continued driving away”, said Maldonado.

The journalist said he had not received previous threats, but because of the delicate and dangerous position journalists occupy in Honduras, he filed a formal report with the local public prosecutor.

On the same day, Diario La Tribuna reported that Revista Imagen opinion columnist Geyby Arriaga had been attacked. The paper said that on 15 May in the El Benque neighbourhood of San Pedro Sula, people on a minibus shot at Arriaga and his wife, who were travelling in their car.

Arriaga said the attack could be connected to his opinion columns and that he had received a text message reading “we'll kill you for talking shit in the magazine”.
