Iran: Iran summons Swiss envoy over US threats

Tehran, Nov 3, IRNA – Foreign Ministry summoned Swiss Ambassador to Tehran Livia Leu Agosti, also in charge of US interests in Iran, to convey Iran’s protest over “US threats against Iranian officials.”In a letter of protest, Islamic Republic of Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned a US congressional meeting entitled “On the Issue of Assassinating Iranian Officials.”

'Considering the threats made against the Iranian officials in this session, in case of any kind of terrorist action against Iranian officials, the American government will be held responsible,' head of Foreign Ministry’s North America Office told Leu Agosti.

The Swiss Ambassador to Iran Livia Leu Agosti said Tehran's letter of protest will be relayed to the US Department of State and their response will be also relayed to Iran as soon as possible.

Iran has complained about testimony given to the US Congress’ Homeland Security Committee by two military analysts invited to speak as expert witnesses on October 26.

The first, a US retired four-star general who helped plan the US-led occupation of Iraq, Jack Keane, called for the killing of commanders of Iran’s Qods Force in retaliation for their alleged role in a plot to kill the Saudi ambassador to Washington, Adel al-Jubeir.

The other witness, Reuel Marc Gerecht, a former CIA officer and currently a senior fellow at the neo-conservative think-tank the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, agreed.

Since 1980 when diplomatic relations between Tehran and Washington was severed, the Swiss Embassy in Tehran has a section which represents the US interests in Iran.
