According to IRNA, the Presidential Office website further quoted President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as condoling once again the martyrdom of Borhaneddin Rabbani in a terrorist attack to his Afghan counterpart.

He also condemned the criminal act, reiterating, “The assassination of Rabbani proved the fact that the enemies never wish the region to achieve peace and stability and are opposed to the emergence of understanding and harmony in Afghanistan.”

The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran said that Borhaneddin Rabbani was a kind hearted revolutionary Muslim who was always wholeheartedly at the service of the Afghan Government and nation.

He reiterated, “By assassinating that pious and selfless human being the enemies committed a huge crime and today we must contribute to calming down the incited sentiments of the Afghan nation by promoting an atmosphere of logical and peaceful thinking.”

Ahmadinejad meanwhile emphasized the need for alertness of the regional governments and nations about the plots hatched against them by the enemies and joint contribution to the emergence of mutual regional understanding and harmony.

He said that continuation of trilateral consultations among Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan would be an effective move in line with promoting regional understanding, adding, “The enemies would never be agreed with the emergence of regional brotherhood and friendship, but we must do our best for approximation of the hearts and the minds.”

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s President Hamid Karzai, too, in the phone talk appreciated the good will and continual support of the Islamic Republic of Iran ob behalf of his government and his nation, arguing, “The assassination of Borhaneddin Rabbani was a great and irremunerable loss for the Afghan nation and Government.”

President Karzai added, “Afghanistan perpetually supports the efforts aimed at the establishment of sustainable peace and stability in the region, because we know that such efforts are in favor of the entire regional nations.”

He also voiced support for President Ahmadinejad’s proposal for continuation of Iran-Afghanistan-Pakistan trilateral meetings at various levels, arguing, “Such meetings and consultations are of utmost importance and would definitely contribute to strengthening the atmosphere of regional friendship and cooperation.”

Iran and Afghanistan have in recent years constantly broadened level of cooperation in cultural, construction, economic and even military fields, despite the US-led western and NATO efforts aimed at disturbing good neighborly ties between Iran and its entire neighbors.
