So I guess we'll have to do it while we're here

As you may have seen from the big notice on the right of this blog, today is the last time this year any of my blogs will be published. "Hooray" I hear you say, in which case, I wonder why you read it in the first place!

But hey, some people are never truly happy unless they have somebody cleverer than them to pull apart. It's what keeps the tabloids in business, 'Hi Rupert, will you be handing out new blindfolds to your readers as a thank you this Christmas?

Of course there are others who will say, "Aaw" and to those I say, "Have no fear, come next year, Hitch will be here." I never go anywhere in a hurry except to the shop when I am out of cigarettes.

It hasn't been an easy year for this world and as usual, it has been the weak, the innocent, the ordinary men, women and children who have suffered at the hands of mother nature, and at the hands of the rich and powerful - the ones in fine clothes or camouflage jackets and chests full of medals in countries that have changed name since I was a kid, but which still see no peace.

If I were a naive songwriter, I could knock together a few verses about how next year, all will be different. Things will change (What happened to that Mr. Obama?) and all the people of the world will live in peace and harmony. Find myself the right agent or PR guru, and it might even sell a few copies. Problem is, we all know that's a load of crap.

Things will not be different next year. People will die needlessly because of the greed of the rich, powerful and protected. Despite Anti Corruption Day and Human Rights Day, money will still change hands for favors done, and hundreds of thousands will languish in jails around the world for speaking the truth, speaking their minds or just being different.

Nothing is going to change, except new persecutors will come along to persecute new victims.

Sounds gloomy doesn't it? Yes it is gloomy. But there is always hope. Maybe activists, dreamers, campaigners, wont totally change things - certainly not in my lifetime. Should we just sit back and say nothing - accept the status quo without uttering a word? Yes we could do - be a lot easier wouldn't it?

My thoughts however, maybe we wont or can not change things - but why give the bastards an easy ride?

To those who betray and persecute the innocent, those who wage war for greed and power, just remember, that although they may not realize it, activists and writers around the world are singing a few lines by Phil Ochs.

And I won't be laughing at the lies when I'm gone
And I can't question how or when or why when I'm gone

Can't live proud enough to die when I'm gone

So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

Till Jan 4, 2011 - wherever you and your loved ones may be - be safe.
