Romania: Romania to lay off 3,000 social workers

FOCUS Information Agency - Romania’s Government decided Wednesday to lay off about 3,000 employees in social assistance units, after applying cost standards meant to reduce costs by 37% compared to 2009 and save 350 million lei (EUR1=RON4.1620) of the state budget, Romanian Mediafax news agency reports.

"Of the about 32,000 employees that work in the system - child protection, social assistance for the elderly and the disabled - about 3,000 employees will be laid off, as cost standards require it. This means expenses in 2010 will be lower compared to 2009," Labor Minister Mihai Seitan said.

Seitan said budget funds for child protection will be reduced by 26%, RON317 million less than in 2009, funds for the disabled will see a 8% cut (RON36.6 million) and funds for social assistance for the elderly will be reduced by 3% (RON3.69 million).
