Bangladesh: Bangladesh mulls "special begging zones"

Bangladesh is considering creating "special begging zones" to tackle the problem on the streets of Dhaka.

Gazi Mohammad Nurul Kabir, head of the government's Disabled Welfare Foundation, said officials will survey beggars in Dhaka with the help of "a top TV star" to find out why they beg, before implementing a rehabilitation scheme including free job training, free distribution of rickshaws, grocery shops and basic houses.

"But if we find that these benefits don't keep them away from begging, we have a plan to create special begging zones in the city where they can beg without creating a nuisance."
