New Caledonia: New President for New Caledonia

New Caledonia's 54-seat Congress has elected anti-independence leader Philippe Gomes as the new president of the local 11-member government, the Oceania Flash reported on Friday.

But the position of vice-president remained vacant.

In accordance with their representation within the Congress, the pro-French parties have the right to seven of the 11 portfolios in the yet-to-be-formed government. The pro-independence camp claims the remaining four portfolios.
