Ecuador: Popular president on course for victory

Radio Netherlands reports that in Ecuador, voting has finished in the country's general elections. Exit polls have suggested that incumbent President Rafael Correa can count on a comfortable victory with approximately 50 percent of all votes cast. Former president Lucio GutiƩrrez is lagging far behind.

Mr Correa's victory has been expected for some time. The left wing president is extremely popular, especially with the poor. Voters are said to trust him because of his efforts to combat poverty throughout the country. Many Ecuadoreans also believe he does well at protecting the country's international interests.
