Bilateral Relations: Peru, Japan to start FTA talks

Xinhua reports Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Garcia Belaunde Tuesday announced that Peru will start negotiation with Japan in March for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which is expected to be reached this year.

Garcia Belaunde told local radio station Programs del Peru (RPP) that he met with his Japanese counterpart Hirofumi Nakasone Tuesday morning, who affirmed the international financial crisis will not affect Japan's future negotiations with other Latin American countries.

"He (Nakasone) affirmed there will be some preliminary negotiations in March, by which we can set our negotiation program," he said, adding that Japan has stated that to tackle the international crisis, protectionist policies must be avoided.
