Bolivia: Morales declares vote "illegal"

Sunday's vote in favor of autonomy in Bolivia's richest state was "illegal and unconstitutional," President Evo Morales said in a national broadcast after the poll.

He called for the opposition governor of Santa Cruz and other governors looking at making the same step to begin dialogue, reports AFP.

"This illegal and unconstitutional vote didn't have the success hoped for by certain families," he said, stressing the high level of abstention.

The "families" he referred to were landowning dynasties in Santa Cruz that helped organize the vote.
