Bangladesh: Companies urged to subsidise food for workers

ABC Radio reports Bangladesh's finance minister is urging company owners to spend some of their profits to subsidise food for workers. Mirza Azizul Islam made the request to defuse mounting tensions over soaring prices.

The majority of Bangladeshi households spend nearly 70 percent of their income on food.

Bangladesh, which has a population of 144 million, is one of the world's poorest nations with 40 percent living under the poverty line.
