American professor wins major water treatment prize

American professor Perry McCarty has won the 2007 Stockholm Water Prize for his methods to improve biological treatment processes of .

The 76 year old will receive the $US150,000 cash prize, along with a symbolic glass sculpture, on August 16 at an awards ceremony in Stockholm during the World Water Week.

McCarty, is an environment engineer and a Stanford University professor. He was cited for his "pioneering work in developing the scientific approach for the design and operation of water and wastewater systems".
