Women's Issues: New UN deputy secretary general calls for urgent action to curb violence against women - all calls no action

The newly appointed UN deputy secretary general, has said that countries around the world must step up efforts to fight violence against women because it is a huge problem that is not going away.

At a press conference in New York, Asha-Rose Migiro said "Violence against women is an issue that cannot wait..a brief look at the statistics demonstrates the urgency with which we have to act."

Do you know how many times each day I see such statements? A lot.

Do you know how much violence against women has decreased? Bugger all.

And when was the last time the UN acted with any urgency? Perhaps the women and children of Rwanda, Darfur and Chad might like to comment on that one.
