International Development: World Bank can do more to protect the interest of women and children

The Executive Director of Human Rights Watch, Kenneth Roth has said that the World Bank can do more to protect the interest of women and children and other vulnerable groups in developing countries.

"The Bank's support for primary education and health care can be seen as part of an effort to help governments progressively implement economic and social rights," Roth said in a special report entitled, "Operationalising Human rights :The challenge for Development Organisations" published in the Development Outreach book of the World Bank.

While praising the Bank for supporting women's issues in Afghanistan in other developing countries, he said these efforts have largely been adhoc measures."The Gender Assessment recommendations for example are rarely mainstreamed into Country Assistance Strategies," Roth said.
