Corruption: Former French ambassador to Bulgaria faces visa scam charges

The former French Ambassador to Bulgaria Dominique Chassard, will face a court in Strasbourg on charges of providing illegal visas to France to Bulgarian prostitutes.

French and Belgian police unveiled the scam in 2001, when they noted a suspicious increase in the number of young Bulgarian prostitutes arriving in their countries.

Chassard's wife Petya Boneva and two more people have also been called to testify.

According to Bulgarian investigators, Chassard was not directly tied to the scam, but his lack of control over the handing of visas, helped the illegal business flourish.
