International Development: Trade liberalisation in Malawi has worsened poverty

A report called, "Trade Liberalisation: A Poverty Trap for the Poor in Malawi" published by local NGO, the Malawi Economic Justice Network (MEJN), claims that Malawi's trade liberalisation policies have adversely affected smallholder farmers and undermined the food security of the poor.

Previously, all produce was sold to Malawi's state grain marketer, ADMARC, but restructuring has resulted in producers no longer having an established market paying set prices for their crops.
