Communication: Email and SMS hit Australia Post profits

Although Australia Post has reported a one per cent increase in profit, earnings in the letters division has fallen by $57 million.

Letters now account for only 14 per cent of the total messaging market the majority being the mailing of accounts, bills, statements and cheques. Personal mail accounts for just 5 per cent of the market.

Call me old fashioned but no email or SMS message can ever have the same romance as a handwritten love letter.
