International Development: 260 million Indians below the poverty line

Over 260 million people in India live below the poverty line, more than 190 million in rural areas.

Uttar Pradesh tops the list of poverty stricken states with an estimated 53 million living below the poverty line.

The figures were in a report to Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament.
